    Stonington PZC continues YMCA hearing

Mystic — The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission voted to continue its public hearing Tuesday to its March 1 meeting on an application from the Ocean Community YMCA to build a 12,500-square-foot addition and create additional parking.

About a dozen people spoke in support of the project at Tuesday’s hearing, but commission members raised questions about some technical aspects of the plan involving drainage and other issues.

YMCA officials are expected to address those questions in preparation for the continuation of the hearing.

The $7.2 million plan calls for demolishing a portion of the building, adding a 12,500-square-foot addition to the rear and renovating the remainder of the building.

There would be improved handicapped access, new locker rooms including family and special needs locker rooms and a new entrance area.

The YMCA plans to launch a capital campaign to help fund the majority of the project and is also seeking a state grant to offset the cost.
