UPDATED: Early Thursday storm knocks out power, causes school closures, delays

Strong winds that blew through the region overnight Wednesday into Thursday resulted in power outages and some school closures and delays on Thursday.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy declared a limited State of Emergency to assist with power restoration.

“This declaration is necessary to allow utility crews from Canada to enter the United States and help with power restoration in the state,” Malloy said in a statement. “I am committed to do everything in my authority to help the residents of the state who are still without power and this declaration will help that effort.”

Flanders School in East Lyme and Oakdale Elementary School in Montville were closed Thursday.

According to Ledyard police, Eversource officials said crews worked Thursday to repair power lines that went down on state Route 12 in the area of Hurlbutt Road.

Gallup Hill Road in Ledyard was closed Thursday afternoon between Town Farm and Wendell Comrie roads, after fallen utility poles made it impassable, according to police.

Norwich Public Utilities officials said about 300 customers were without power about 3 a.m. Thursday. By 8:15 a.m., the number of customers without power fell to less than 50 — most of whom lived on White Plains Road and Barber Lane.

A new power outage reported on West Thames Street in Norwich around 8:20 a.m. impacted about 320 residential and commercial customers. By 10 a.m., power was restored to all Norwich residents, according to officials.

Just before noon, Eversource's outage map showed 1,625 outages in Ledyard, 1,589 outages in Montville and 804 outages in East Lyme.

At around 7 p.m., the map showed the number of outages had dwindled to 371 in Ledyard and 45 in East Lyme, while Montville had 1,788 outages.
