Stonington selectmen approve dog park recommendations

Stonington — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Wednesday to implement a series of recommendations for the unofficial dog park at the Town Dock, including making alterations to the park so it has less impact on neighbors.

The board authorized First Selectman Rob Simmons to work with department heads, boards and commissions to implement the recommendations, which include reducing the size of the area where unleashed dogs can roam and possibly installing screening to buffer the park from adjacent homes as long as it does not block views of the water and can receive borough zoning permits.

In addition, the committee has recommended that the town consider creating a second dog park at one of three sites: behind West Vine Street School, at the school administration building and behind the Human Services Department.

Simmons said the selectmen also approved creating a line item in the budget for private contributions made to the town to support the dog park.

In addition, he said the dogs in the Town Dock area, who are not in the off-leash dog park, need to be kept on a leash.

The changes are designed to alleviate complaints about the park from neighbors.

Last year, Laura Ann Gabrysch and Frank Mastrapasqua, who own a Front Street home that borders the park, sued the town, alleging it has been operating an “illegal dog park,” that it has not received any permits or zoning approvals for the park, that it poses a danger to the public and is a nuisance.

The suit is pending in Superior Court.

Other neighbors also have complained about incessant barking and shouting, feces strewn about and harassment by dog park users.
