    Day journalists honored by regional news association

    Dedham, Mass. — Three journalists at The Day were presented with NESNE awards during a ceremony here Thursday night.

    The awards are presented by the New England Society of News Editors to recognize "excellence in journalistic achievement and the very best work produced in New England."

    Carlos Virgen and John Ruddy were honored in the Best Digital Innovation category for "The Cost of Freedom," an interactive presentation of Connecticut National Guardsmen from the New London area who had been called to active duty in World War I.

    Ann Baldelli and Colin A. Young, a former Day reporter, were recognized for "Kelo v. New London: 10 years later," a series of stories on the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision on eminent domain.

    Recognized as finalists were Melissa Babcock for columns written after being diagnosed with cancer; Rick Koster for a story on poet Margaret Gibson; Judy Benson for "From the source to the sea," a series on the Pawcatuck River; Tim Cook for "Grieving Mother" in Best News Photo category, and Shelly Yang for "Swabs challenged at R-Day" in Best Video category.

    Other awards presented included the Judith Vance Weld Spirit of Journalism Award to Karen Bordeleau of Groton, the retired executive editor of the Providence Journal; the Master Reporter Award to Josh Kovner of the Hartford Courant; the Master Photographer Award to Steve Heaslip of the Cape Cod Times; and the College Newspaper of the Year to the Quinnipiac Chronicle.
