Aston Martin owner gears up for Barrett-Jackson auction at Mohegan Sun

Mystic — Phil Pavone’s about to roll the dice at Mohegan Sun, which is not to say he’s circling the casino's craps tables.

An avowed car “enthusiast,” Pavone has consigned the 2002 Aston Martin Vanquish he owns to this month’s Barrett-Jackson collector car auction at Mohegan Sun, surrendering title in a “no reserve” arrangement that ensures the vehicle will be sold to the highest bidder, regardless of whether Pavone thinks the highest bid is high enough.

Only vehicles whose estimated value exceeds $150,000 can be considered for "reserve" placement, meaning they can be withdrawn if bids fail to reach a minimum level.

“With no reserve, you’re rolling the dice,” Pavone said Wednesday, standing in the driveway of his Mystic home. “You could end up with half of what the car’s worth — or twice what it’s worth. Either way, you're not going to see it again.”

For Pavone, 67, who owns AZ Pawn in Norwich, the risk is worth it.

“I was ready to ship it to Texas when I heard about Barrett-Jackson coming to Mohegan Sun,” he said of his Aston Martin. “I was thrilled. It’s a great opportunity to get more money for your car.”

Barrett-Jackson can be counted on to bring in hundreds or even thousands of potential buyers and sellers at events that typically take place in Scottsdale, Ariz., Palm Beach, Fla., and Las Vegas, Nev.

The June 23-25 auction at Mohegan Sun, the first Barrett-Jackson has held in the Northeast, promises to be the biggest event the casino has ever hosted.

With the event weeks away, more than 25,000 tickets have been sold. On-site hotel rooms for the auction dates sold out months ago.

And millions of people will watch live television coverage.

Pavone figures he’s bought and sold 80 to 90 luxury cars over the past 50 years — Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Panteras, Rolls Royces, Jaguars and the Aston Martin, which he bought in 2012 for a price he declined to disclose.

He said he’s hoping it will fetch something approaching $90,000 at auction.

The Aston Martin, which is in pristine condition, has a pewter gray exterior and black leather interior.

Its V12, 460-horsepower engine can propel it at 195 mph.

The six-speed transmission can shift manually or automatically.

Under the hood, a plaque reads, “Handbuilt in England,” identifying the car as one of the last of its kind, before they became mass produced.

Pavone said he bought the car in Maryland from its original owner, a computer programmer who rarely drove it.

Pavone likes to take the car out for “Sunday drives” in good weather.

In the four years he’s had it, he’s put about 10,000 miles on it. A Barrett-Jackson listing indicates it has 36,000 actual miles.

And then there’s the Connecticut vanity plate: “SPY 007.”

Aston Martins, Pavone pointed out, have been associated with James Bond ever since one of them appeared in 1964’s “Goldfinger.”

Many a more recent Bond film has featured an Aston Martin, including 2002’s “Die Another Day,” which gave sales of the Vanquish a royal boost.

Pavone already has plans to replace his Aston Martin, which occupies the middle bay of his three-car garage — residing between his “everyday car,” a 2002 Porsche Turbo Carrera, and his girlfriend’s 2004 Mercedes 500 SL.

He's got a deposit down on a Lamborghini in Houston.
