Davis-Standard in Pawcatuck seeks state funding and zoning permit for new addition

Stonington — Davis-Standard is seeking state money to help fund a 15,045-square-foot expansion of its Pawcatuck plant that would house the operations of a Massachusetts company it acquired last year and provide 30 skilled machinist jobs.

The extrusion company has filed an application for a special use permit with the Planning and Zoning Commission.

A public hearing will be scheduled.

Davis Standard Executive Vice President Ernie Plasse confirmed Tuesday that the company has been working with the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

“There’s nothing definitive yet. We hope to have a plan in place within 30 days,” he said

DECD spokesman Jim Watson was not immediately available for comment Tuesday about the details of the funding.

Such funding typically comes in the form of grants, low-interest loans and forgiveable loans.

The state Bond Commission, which would have to approve any proposed funding, has canceled its Friday meeting. It next meets on July 29.

The 15,045-square-foot addition would be constructed at the front of the Davis-Standard building facing Route 1.

The application states the addition would have no significant impact on traffic volume or operations, as the new employees would be spread out over three shifts.

Plasse said the addition would provide well-paying, skilled jobs for the community.

Last September, Davis-Standard announced it had acquired Gloucester Engineering of Gloucester, Mass.

“The purchase of Gloucester strengthens Davis-Standard’s blown film offering by adding experienced design and process engineering capabilities, a large installed base and greater aftermarket capabilities worldwide,” the company said in announcing the acquisition.

“Like Davis-Standard, Gloucester has been a respected brand name and innovator in film applications for more than 50 years. Customers of Davis-Standard and Gloucester will now have access to the industry’s premier blown film technology and aftermarket service under one roof," the company said.
