Stonington selectmen approve Pawcatuck mural plan

    This corrects an earlier version

Stonington — The Board of Selectmen has approved a plan for the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce and Ocean Community Chamber Foundation to paint historic business signs on the brick walls of four downtown Pawcatuck buildings.

The murals will mesh with those already painted on a dozen businesses across the Pawcatuck River in downtown Westerly, according to First Selectman Rob Simmons, who called the plan a wonderful program.

He said the town now will identify four sites in Pawcatuck. He said CC O’Brien’s on Mechanic Street has volunteered to let its brick wall be used for one of the murals.

He said that during a presentation of the project at Wednesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting, selectmen heard that such murals in other communities have resulted in drastically increased visitorship.

The chamber foundation has donated $3,000 towards the effort.
