Montville recycling pickup will soon be biweekly, with bigger bins

Montville — Recyclers in town will soon get bigger bins and half as many pickups.

The Town Council recently voted in favor of amending the contract with Willimantic Waste — which collects recycling waste from residential customers — to allow them to collect residential recycling every other week, instead of weekly.

The change will save the town about $300,000 over the current five-year contract, Mayor Ronald McDaniel said.

Willimantic Waste will deliver new 95-gallon containers at no cost to residents to hold the additional recycled waste before the new schedule goes into effect, McDaniel said.

McDaniel said the new contract and larger bins could encourage more people to recycle. Most households only have 10-gallon bins, he said.

“We’re doing anything we can to encourage people to recycle,” he said.

The more people put their recyclable goods into the Willimantic Waste bins for sorting instead of the town’s transfer station, the better, he said.

“Any time that we can divert any waste it makes sense,” he said.

Several southeastern Connecticut towns, including Norwich, have recycling pickup contracts with Willimantic Waste.

The company sorts the recyclables at its Willimantic facility, then sells recycled goods in both local and international markets.

The town first signed its initial contract of single-stream recycling in 2009, eliminating the need for the town to haul recycling to the plant.

McDaniel did not specify when the new biweekly contract will go into effect.
