Foxwoods, dealers reach tentative contract agreement

Mashantucket — Foxwoods Resort Casino and the union representing the casino’s 1,500 table games dealers have tentatively agreed on a new multiyear contract, both sides confirmed Monday.

The deal, which calls for a retroactive pay increase as well as pay increases in 2017, 2018 and 2019, could be ratified Sunday.

“Local 2121 (of the United Auto Workers) has reached a tentative agreement with Foxwoods management that the union's Bargaining Committee and Executive Board are recommending members approve,” Andrea Goodrich, the local’s president, wrote in an email.

Ratification voting will take place Friday and Sunday.

“I can confirm that a mutually beneficial tentative agreement has been reached, and we are optimistic that the members will approve the agreement at the ratification vote this week,” Dale Merrill, Foxwoods’ vice president of human resources, said in a statement.

Local 2121 officials have scheduled an informational meeting with union members Wednesday.

Word of the tentative agreement surfaced Friday on the union’s private website.

“We are proud that in tough economic times, we won a pay increase retroactive to March 6, 2016, and increases for each year of the contract,” union leaders wrote. “We held down and delayed increases in health insurance premiums. … We upheld the principle that the dealers alone get to decide on any change in our toke (tip) distribution method. We won further improvements in the air quality at work…”

Posted highlights of the contract indicate it calls for a pay hike of 25 cents an hour retroactive to March 6. Subsequent raises of 30 cents an hour would take effect in March 2017, March 2018 and March 2019. So-called “dual rates” — dealers who serve at times as dealers and at other times as supervisors — would get a retroactive raise of 2.5 percent, followed by raises of 3 percent in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The union “firmly rejected” management’s proposal to unilaterally change the existing method for distributing tips, according to the website post.

Placement of “No Smoking” and “Be Considerate When Smoking” signs is addressed in the contract language, as are “firmer definitions” relating to air-quality testing protocols.

Local 2121’s previous contract with Foxwoods expired Dec. 31, 2015. The terms of that deal have remained in effect pending the signing of a new contract. Negotiations reached an impasse in May, when some issues were submitted to arbitration.

The union’s roughly 1,500 members deal blackjack, baccarat and other card and tile games as well as poker, roulette and craps. Earlier in the year, nearly 20 “poker associates” — workers who service poker games by checking for damaged cards and performing other duties — joined the union.

Local 2121 is the largest bargaining unit among Foxwoods employees. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which owns Foxwoods, also has contracts with unions representing casino beverage servers and tradesmen as well as tribal firefighters.
