Ledyard council updates waste, recycling ordinance

Ledyard — The Town Council approved a long-discussed update to the town's waste management and recycling ordinance Wednesday night.

Public Works Director Steve Maslin said the updated was needed to better reflect the services that the town currently provides.

It changes language in the recycling policy to "single-stream" recycling to reflect the collection of unsorted items, and lists commercial tipping fees for the town as $4 per ton plus the rate that the Southeastern Connecticut Energy Recovery Association charges, as well as allows suspension of service as a consequence of violating the ordinance.

It has been reviewed by the Administration Committee and Land Use, Planning and Public Works committees for the past few months.

During the public hearing, resident Eric Treaster noted that the new ordinance for residential waste is for "eligible residential properties,” which he felt would be troublesome if it were interpreted to apply to commercial apartment developments or mobile home parks.

"I believe the owners (of commercial properties) ... should be treated in a fair and uniform manner and should pay for the cost of removal of the waste their properties generate,” he said.

Councilors approved the updates to the ordinance unanimously, but instructed both committees to leave the topic on their agenda to consider Treaster’s comments.
