Stonington Spanish students raise money for Peru school

Stonington — Two years after a service trip to a Peruvian village, students in the Spanish Honor Society at Stonington High School raised more than $600 in one week to send back to the families for Christmas.

Jenna Spadaro, president of the honor society, said in an email that she and the other students on the trip read to children and helped rebuild and reinforce the mud and hay walls in their preschool in Ollantaytambo, northwest of the city of Cusco. Despite the long walk to school and poor conditions, the children were happy, and she said this year she wanted to give back to them.

Along with donations of dental hygiene products and school supplies, the honor society raised the funds to give to the village for gifts for the children or school projects.
