New London church to host screening of Newtown film

New London — All Souls New London Unitarian Universalist Congregation will host a screening of the film “Newtown” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and welcome a father of one of the victims in one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history.

Filmed over the course of nearly three years, the filmmakers used unique access and never-before-heard testimonies to tell a story of the aftermath of the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

“'Newtown' documents a traumatized community fractured by grief and driven toward a sense of purpose,” according to the filmmakers. “Joining the ranks of a growing club to which no one wants to belong, a cast of characters interconnect to weave an intimate story of community resilience.”

Sandy Hook parent advocate David Wheeler, whose son, Ben, was one of the shooting victims, will join a discussion following the screening with Dr. Alan Brown, a criminologist in Southern Connecticut State University's social work program.
