New London Republicans decry Malloy budget

New London — The New London Republican Town Committee issued a statement this month denouncing Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s budget proposal.

Committee Chairwoman Shannon Brenek said opposition to the spending proposal is “based on the fact that the people of Connecticut cannot continue to allow borrowing for items on a ‘want list’ when the basic needs of operating the state are in a fiscal free fall.”

“Renovating the XL center is a private enterprise and should not be part of any proposed budget, especially when it means more bonding and adding to the already out of control debt service obligations of Connecticut taxpayers,” she said in a statement.

“It is vitally important for the residents of New London to understand the proposal by Governor Malloy has a direct impact on them and what will happen as far as the local budget proposal and looming tax increases,” Brenek said. “The Governor is shifting fiscal burdens to municipalities rather than dealing with the budget at the state level. This tactic combined with outrageous state licensing fee hikes is an attack on all Connecticut residents and taxpayers," she said.

"The budget problems are the result of poor fiscal management by the Malloy Administration, and the inability of Democratic leadership to operate within budget limitations. The taxpayers of Connecticut have no more to give. It is time for Connecticut to live within its means,” Brenek said.
