Coalition's 'Tourism Advocacy Day' postponed to April 24

Tourism advocates won’t get their day at the state Capitol until next month.

The Connecticut Tourism Coalition, which had planned to rally Wednesday for stronger public support of the tourism industry, announced Monday that it was pushing "Tourism Advocacy Day" back to April 24. It cited forecasts of Tuesday’s storm as the reason.

Wednesday’s meeting of the General Assembly’s tourism caucus also was postponed.

The coalition, an alliance of tourism advocates, many from southeastern Connecticut, is pushing for a more reliable source of annual funding for tourism promotion. It’s backing a bill that would dedicate a portion of the revenue generated by the state’s 15 percent tax on hotel room charges.

A bill that would authorize the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes to develop a third Connecticut casino in East Windsor, proposed that 15 percent of that casino's table-games revenue be dedicated to tourism promotion.
