East Lyme Middle School student receives racially charged letter

East Lyme — An East Lyme Middle School student allegedly received "an anonymous derogatory and racially charged letter" in the mail over the weekend, according to a notice from the school principal.

Principal Judy DeLeeuw notified families within the Neptune's Kiva, an organized subset of the entire fifth-grade class.

She said she has asked students to report to an adult if they know anything about the incident. She asked families with information to contact Assistant Principal Jennifer Frost, East Lyme Schools Director of Security Chris Olsen or herself.

"We take an incident of this nature very seriously and continue to investigate," she wrote. "Although we do not know if this letter originated from another student at the middle school or elsewhere, we want to be proactive in intervening and continuing to teach all students about tolerance, acceptance, and diversity," DeLeeuw wrote in the notice.
