Montville considers selling former Youth Service building

Montville — The town's former Youth Services building, a vacant one-story structure across Route 32 from Town Hall, could soon be up for sale.

The Town Council voted Monday to schedule a public hearing before it decides whether to sell the building, which the town's Youth Services bureau occupied for more than two decades before the department moved to the Fair Oaks community center building last summer.

The .64-acre property sits vacant on a busy stretch of Route 32 alongside residential and business properties near the intersection with Maple Avenue.

The Planning and Zoning Commission has recommended that the town sell the building, and the Town Council will take a final vote on the issue following the public hearing, scheduled for June 14 at 6:45 p.m. in Town Hall.

The entire parcel, including a one-story building and a parking lot, has an assessed value of $175,150. The town has owned the building since 1971, according to town records.

"There's people that are interested in it," Mayor Ronald McDaniel said at Monday's meeting.

Town officials began talking about moving the Youth Services bureau to the former Fair Oaks school building, which has been mostly empty since it closed in the early 1990s, several years ago.

The bureau now uses two classrooms and the gymnasium for kids’ programs and offices to administer its counseling, leadership and community service programs and a parent-toddler playgroup.
