Lyme-Old Lyme Chamber of Commerce announces scholarship winners

The Lyme-Old Lyme Chamber of Commerce recognized several students and faculty members for their work at its annual meeting on June 21.

Olivia Ellis of Lyme received the Business Leadership Senior Scholarship and will be attending Eastern Connecticut University in the fall.

Sophie Christiano of Old Lyme received a Special Award in recognition for her work with the Lyme-Old Lyme Volunteer Connection and will be attending Wellesley College in the fall.

Lyme-Old Lyme High School juniors Amanda Marsh, Reed Spitzer and Cole Hamparian were recognized for being N. Rutherford Sheffield Business Students of the Month in 2017, a program set up by LOLHS business teachers Leslie Traver and Joanne Hedwall.

The program is a new extension of the N. Rutherford Sheffield Memorial Award for Entrepreneurial Promise and Achievement, which was established in 1999.

Traver and Hedwall were also recognized by the Chamber for their work on the new program and dedication to the Chamber.

Gabriel Barclay, a freshman at Georgetown University and a 2016 winner of the Business Leadership Senior Scholarship, spoke at the meeting, saying that the scholarship was a major influence on his decision to major in business. State Sen. Paul Formica, R-East Lyme, and state Rep. Devin Carney, R-Old Saybrook, were also in attendance.

The Lyme-Old Lyme Chamber of Commerce has awarded more than $33,000 in scholarships since the start of its scholarship program.
