    Norwich Republicans endorse candidates

Norwich — The Republican Town Committee endorsed former Mayor and current City Council President Pro Tempore Peter Nystrom for mayor, five council candidates and six candidates for school board at a caucus Wednesday.

A longtime Norwich politician, Nystrom served as mayor from 2009 to 2013 before losing to current Democratic Mayor Deberey Hinchey.

Nystrom said he is “excited” to run for mayor and said the current Republican-controlled City Council has been successful in cutting spending and reducing taxes.

Nystrom said if he wins the election this fall, it would be his last term as mayor, saying: “I believe in term limits.”

The town committee endorsed City Council incumbents Stacy Gould, Joanne Philbrick and William Nash and new candidates Rob Dempsky, a past state legislative candidate, and current Board of Education member Margaret Becotte.

Incumbent Board of Education members Aaron “Al” Daniels, Dennis Slopak and Rashid Haynes were endorsed, along with former board member Rodney Bowie, Patricia Staley and Noreen Zercie.

Incumbent Treasurer Michael Gualtieri also was endorsed unanimously for re-election.
