Submarine Vermont to be christened Saturday at Electric Boat

Groton – A christening ceremony will be held for the future attack submarine Vermont at Electric Boat's headquarters here on Saturday.

The Vermont (SSN 792), is the 19th Virginia-class submarine, which take about five years to build. EB and Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia build these submarines together under a teaming arrangement with each alternating delivery.

The ship's sponsor, Gloria Valdez, who served as deputy assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, will christen the submarine by breaking a bottle of sparkling wine from the state of Vermont across its bow.

The event is by invitation only. Submarine christenings usually attract several thousand guests including top military officials, politicians, EB employees and their families, and, of course, the crew and their family members.

The event will start at 11 a.m., and is expected to last about 75 minutes. A live video and audio webcast of the event will be accessible online at: www.gdeb.com. Coverage will begin at 10:30 a.m. EST. The program will be available for on-demand replay for one week, beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.
