Groton Town Police nab People's Bank suspect

Groton — Police have arrested Vincent Nicastro, 32, of Westerly, R.I., in connection with Wednesday's robbery at the People's United Bank branch at the Super Stop & Shop store in Groton, the second robbery in a week at the branch.

The robbery occurred about 3:20 p.m., when a man passed a note to a teller demanding cash. He fled on foot into the shopping center parking lot.

Groton Town Police obtained an arrest warrant for Nicastro on Thursday, according to Groton Town Police Detective Lt. John Varone. Nicastro was taken into custody by the Westerly Police Department. He was presented in a Rhode Island court on Friday and waived extradition back to Connecticut.

Back in Connecticut, Nicastro was charged by warrant with third-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny

Varone credits the Waterford Police Department, New London Police Department and the Westerly Police Department for their assistance.

The robbery came just two days after Groton Town police charged a man in connection with an April 9 robbery at the same bank. The suspect in that case, Timothy J. Foye, remains locked up and is a suspect in a spree of recent convenience store robberies.

Held in lieu of a $250,000 bond, Nicastro is due to appear Monday in New London Superior Court.
