Stonington Country Club selected as site for Guinness Book of World Records attempt

Stonington — It's never been done before. And the iconic Guinness Book of World Records is watching. The foursome of golfers - including a U.S. Navy veteran, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and a U.S. Army veteran - is attempting to set a World Record while raising funds and awareness for Rounds FORE Warriors - An Epic Golf Adventure.

Day 17 of the 25-day venture brings the foursome to Stonington Country Club in Stonington on June 9, teeing off shortly after a brief 7 a.m. ceremony that will include a live performance of the national anthem, recognition of area veterans, and a ceremonial tee shot by Capt. Robert F. Fox, a retired U.S. Navy veteran and member of Stonington Country Club.

The selection of Stonington Country Club to represent the state of Connecticut in this world record attempt is fitting, as it leases its land from the U.S. Coast Guard Foundation and is in close proximity to the Coast Guard Academy in New London and The Naval Submarine Base located in Groton.

The foursome is comprised of Bob Nicoll, a Boston native and board president of the Life Is For Giving foundation; John Weiss, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran; Allen Wakefield, a U.S. Navy veteran; and Joe Weidenhammer, a U.S. Army veteran and former professional golfer.

All of the donations received for Rounds FORE Warriors will be shared with Partner Charities: Final Honors and Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which help surviving family members and preserve the memory of those who served.

Donations can be made directly on the website at http://www.lifeisforgiving.org/. Additionally, Stonington Country Club's PGA Head Golf Professional Mike Myszkowski and Assistant Golf Professional Keith Johnson will be raising funds by playing a golf marathon, attempting to play at least 100 holes in one day today. Pledges can be made as a "flat fee" (i.e. $100) or on a "per hole" basis (i.e. $1/hole). Sponsors can also pledge for birdies, eagles, and holes-in-one. Contact Mike Myszkowski at (860) 535-4035 x14 or mmyszkowski@pga.com to become a sponsor of their one-day golf marathon.

The general public, veterans, active military, and their families are invited to share in the Rounds FORE Warriors ceremony on June 9 at 7 a.m. A small reception will take place during and following the official tee-off. Admission is free, although seating is limited so reservations are required. Call Linda Drake, club manager, at (860) 535-4035 x10.
