Wednesday: Sub base to conduct after-hours Naval Security Force Drill

Groton — From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, residents may hear broadcasts via the Naval Submarine Base's loud speakers. But it will just be a drill.

Sub base will conduct an after-hours Naval Security Force drill Wednesday night. The drill is a regularly scheduled exercise, and not in response to any specific threat.

The training opportunity will enhance the readiness of base Naval Security Forces to respond to threats to the base, according to a news release from the base public affairs office.

A security lockdown alert in a series of two 3-second blasts every 5 seconds will be broadcast via the loud speakers at the start of the drill.

All gates will be closed for a short period following the alert, and there will be some delays entering and leaving base.

All personnel on the base at the time will be required to shelter in place. Patrons and personnel visiting or staying at the base should plan accordingly.

Area residents may also see increased traffic around the base, as well as increased security activity and local emergency response associated with the training event.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
