Guilford’s Nick Fradiani gains Top 5 on ‘Idol’

It’s official: Nick Fradiani is going on the road this summer. The Guilford singer made the Top 5 on “American Idol” on Wednesday night and secured a spot in the TV show’s annual nationwide tour, which will start in Clearwater, Fla., on July 7 and end in Riverside, Calif. on Aug. 28.

The others who will be on the tour are Rayvon Owen, Clark Beckham, Tyanna Jones and Jackie “Jax” Cole. Quentin Alexander was eliminated Wednesday night and sent home.

The 37-city tour doesn’t include a stop in Connecticut. Connecticut fans of “Idol” will have to go to shows in Worcester, Mass. (July 28 at The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts), Providence (Aug. 3 at Veterans Memorial Auditorium) or New York City (Aug. 5 at the Beacon Theatre) to hear the Idols sing. Tickets are for sale at americanidol.com.

Before the tour, Fradiani still has more “American Idol” TV shows to perform. Next week’s elimination will result in a Top 4. It will be broadcast on Wednesday, April 29, from 8 to 10 p.m. on Fox.

Fradiani is contestant No. 6. Audience members can vote for Fradiani by Googling “American Idol vote,” using the Fox Now app, visiting americanidol.com, calling 866-IDOLS06 or texting 6 to 21523. Up to 80 votes per person are allowed on different methods.

On Wednesday’s show, with an “Arena Anthems” theme, Fradiani sang “Harder To Breathe” by Maroon 5 as judge Jennifer Lopez stood and clapped hands over her head during the song.

Judge Harry Connick Jr. was the biggest fan of the performance. “That was really scary for the other people in the competition,” said Connick, who has been critical of Fradiani in past weeks. “You’re one of those guys doing what we had hoped. You’re getting better every week.”

Lopez and Keith Urban praised Fradiani’s singing, but said his stage presence and audience connection needed some work.

Later, Fradiani sang “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart. Lopez liked Fradiani’s singing but repeated her “Harder To Breathe” opinion that Fradiani needed to work on creating special moments for the audience. Urban and Connick were effusive. Urban said, “It’s like you’re really taking everything to heart,” and praised the cool way Fradiani held his guitar. Connick said “Do you think you could sustain a two- or three-hour live show?” Fradiani answered yes, and Connick responded “I think you could, too.”

Fradiani’s “Harder to Breathe” performance was preceded by a charming montage of old photos and videos of a young Fradiani, and a filmed interview with his parents, Elizabeth Fradiani and Nick Fradiani Sr. The father, who also is a popular nightclub singer in the state, said his son’s newfound fame was rubbing off on him, that his phone has been ringing a lot.
