On paper, Doris is the kind of super-quirky character who could easily grate on a viewer. She's an older woman who dresses thrift-store kooky. She is socially awkward and prone to daydreams. She just lost her mother, with whom she lived, and is adrift — but develops a raging crush on a much-younger co-worker. But with the fabulous Sally Field playing her, Doris becomes someone to root for. And Max Greenfield, as the object of Doris' affection, is quietly appealing as he treats Doris like, well, a real person. The movie doesn't always work, and it pushes its eccentric aspirations too hard at times, but Field and Greenfield make for a wonderful team.
