Boston Marathon bomber's college friends face sentencing

BOSTON — Three friends of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev face sentencing this week for obstructing the federal investigation into the 2013 bombings or lying to the FBI.

All three attended the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth with Tsarnaev.

Azamat Tazhayakov and Dias Kadyrbayev were convicted of impeding the investigation by removing items from Tsarnaev's dorm room after the FBI released photos of Tsarnaev and his brother as suspects in the bombings.

A third friend, Robel Phillipos, was convicted of lying to the FBI about being with the other two in Tsarnaev's room when they removed his backpack and computer.

Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured in the bombings. Tsarnaev has been condemned to death by a federal jury and is awaiting formal sentencing on June 24.
