Rhode Island school test scores improve, but growing gap

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island's standardized test scores have improved but there's a growing achievement gap between white and minority students.

The Providence Journal reports that fewer than 22 percent of black and Latino students scored proficient in English, compared to a statewide average of almost 38 percent.

English scores improved by two percentage points for all students. Students improved in five out of eight grade levels.

Math scores improved by five percentage points this year. Nearly 30 percent of all students met the math standards.

The test is the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, known as the PARCC.

Rhode Island is the only state in New England to use the test, and one of seven nationwide.
