Norwich garage catches fire with electric vehicle inside

Norwich ― A fire on Washington Street caused significant damage to a garage with an electric car inside.

At 8:58 a.m. Thursday, Norwich firefighters were called to a garage fire that was in potential danger of spreading to the nearby house at 167 Washington St., Battalion Chief Marc Benjamin said.

Within 3 minutes, a Norwich engine arrived and found smoke venting from two sides of the garage, Benjamin said. The firefighters forced entry through a side door and began clearing a large fire, he said.

The fire was controlled within 20 minutes, Benjamin said, but crews remained at the scene for another half-hour cleaning up wreckage.

No injuries were reported, Benjamin said, but the fire did significant damage to the garage and its contents.

The electric vehicle, which Benjamin said was untouched, did not appear to be a cause of the fire. It is still being investigated by the Norwich Fire Marsha’ls office, he added.

Firefighters from the Yantic, East Great Plain and Mohegan Tribal fire departments responded, along with Norwich Police, Public Utilities, American Ambulance and Norwich Building department, Benjamin said.
