Old Lyme — First responders rescued and administered oxygen to a cat following a fire in the basement of a single-family dwelling on Saturday morning.

The Old Lyme Fire Department was dispatched around 6:20 a.m. Saturday to a reported structure fire in a residence on a private road off of Boston Post Road by Rogers Lake, Old Lyme Fire Department Safety Officer John Cody said.

Firefighters quickly knocked out the fire and rescued the cat. The cat then received a high concentration and steady flow of oxygen from a pediatric oxygen mask, and appeared to be "doing better and better" as time passed, Cody said.

"It did make a difference, so that was really good," Cody said.

Old Lyme EMS and the town's animal control officer also responded to the scene, he said.

No injuries were reported and no medical assistance was needed by any of the several people in the house at the time of the fire, Cody said.

Cody said the fire department responds to incidents such as this by ensuring to bring the department's full spectrum of equipment.

Mutual aid was provided by the Essex Fire Department, which also responded to the scene.

The fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal.
