Fire burns tires, woods in Old Saybrook

Old Saybrook — The Old Saybrook fire marshal is investigating the cause of a blaze that burned woods, brush, dozens of truck tires, a Dumpster and a shed housing a large diesel fuel tank outside a moving and storage company, according to the Old Saybrook Fire Department.

Old Saybrook firefighters responded at 4 p.m. to H.A. Latham Movers, 175 Elm Street. No injuries were reported but nearby businesses in the town's industrial park were evacuated because of the smoke and potential hazard of burning fuel.

Personnel from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called in to assist with environmental concerns. The Westbrook and Old Lyme fire departments also assisted at the scene.
