Groton police warn residents of phone scam

Groton — Town police are warning residents of a phone scam in which the caller is posing as a supervisor from Eversource Energy and selling fraudulent debit cards.

The caller advises the victim their account is past due and the power will be shut off in 24 hours, according to Groton Town Police Lt. John Varone.

The caller directs the victim to a local business where they can purchase a reloadable debit card then instructed to call a number back and provide the access codes for the card. They are also advising the victim to go local businesses that offer MoneyGram Service and to wire the amount to a specified account number, he said.

The calls are coming in on a 1-800 number. The victim is then switched to a 1-845 number.

In one 1-hour period, Varone said police received four complaints from the Mystic section of town.

“This is a scam!” Varone said in a statement. “If you receive a phone call hang up and notify the Groton Town Police or your local police department.”
