State police end search for missing kayaker in Norwich
Norwich — State police on Thursday ended their participation in the search for a missing 17-year-old whose kayak capsized in the Shetucket River on Sunday.
The state police dive team had joined with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Norwich Public Utilities, Norwich police and local fire department personnel in the search for Karl Joseph of Norwich.
Witnesses said Joseph, a junior at Norwich Free Academy, went into the water when his kayak capsized about 10 p.m. Sunday behind 751 N. Main St.
State police had used divers, a boat equipped with sonar, a helicopter and a remote control submersible device to aid in the search of the river.
State police spokesman Sgt. Shane Hassett said Thursday that local police and DEEP were likely to continue their investigation.
Norwich police provided no further information on Thursday.
