Firefighters quickly extinguish Sunday morning Jay Street fire

New London — Firefighters were able to extinguish a fire that erupted at a shelter at 42 Jay St. in less than five minutes, according to New London Battalion Chief Edward Sargent.

The fire started around 8 a.m. Sunday in the bathroom on the second floor of the shelter. By the time firefighters reached the scene, the building had been evacuated.

Firefighters' quick response allowed them to contain the fire — which began to spread from the bathroom to attic — before further damage occurred, Sargent said.

One woman, who was the supervisor of the house, suffered minor smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital for evaluation. There were no other reported injuries.
