Waterford — Police are continuing to investigate a Thursday night accident that required one person to be flown by LifeStar helicopter to Hartford Hospital.

Police said the two-car accident happened at 7:55 p.m. in the area of Old Norwich Road at Uncas Avenue. One of the vehicles flipped over and landed on its roof. Two people in one of the cars were trapped inside. The occupants of the second vehicle were not injured.

Waterford Police Lt. Stephen Bellos said one of the occupants who was trapped, Nicholas Derico, 31, of 192 Maple Ave., Uncasville, was admitted to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for a head injury that was not life-threatening. Derico has since been discharged, Bellos said. Derico identified himself to police as the passenger in the car.

The second person, Robert Piscitello, 34, of 294 Route 164, Preston, was flown to Hartford Hospital and remained in critical condition as of 5:30 p.m. Friday with a head injury, according to Bellos. He said Piscitello is believed to be the vehicle's driver.

The helicopter landed at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, where emergency medical responders could be seen moving a person on a stretcher from an ambulance into the helicopter.

Bellos said he anticipated charges would be filed in the incident.

The roadway was closed for several hours as the Accident Investigative Team investigated the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Thomas Viens or Officer Troy Gelinas at (860) 442-9451.
