Getaway driver in Norwich shooting sentenced to time served

The man who drove David J. Grant from the scene of a fatal shooting in Norwich three years ago, then testified against Grant at his murder trial in April, was sentenced Wednesday to time served followed by five years of probation.

Steven A. “Cuda” Velez, 34, had been incarcerated for more than two years. Judge Hillary B. Strackbein sentenced him to 10 years in prison, suspended after time served, followed by five years of probation for second-degree hindering prosecution and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Grant had shot into a crowd at the Mai Thai Restaurant and Bar off Laurel Avenue in Norwich on June 24, 2012, killing Donna Richardson, 45, and wounding her niece, Crystal Roderick.

He was sentenced last week to 47 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and first-degree assault.

Velez had admitted on the witness stand at Grant’s trial that he drove Grant to Brooklyn after the shooting.

He said he and Grant were both drug dealers from New York City and that he brought Grant to Norwich to “make some money” about a year before the shooting.

Velez said he was not testifying in order to receive consideration in his own criminal case but because he knew the victims.

At the trial, the jury also had viewed a video in which Grant told police that Velez handed him a gun and he shot into the crowd because he had been told that Isaiah “Zay” Lee, who he said had shot a friend of his, was in the crowd.

Velez was represented by attorney Christopher L. Morano. Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen M. Carney prosecuted the case.
