Two Stonington businesses cited after unannounced tobacco inspections

Stonington — Clerks at two Stonington businesses were cited following unannounced compliance inspections by Stonington police and staff from the state’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program.

The inspections were performed in an effort to determine compliance with state laws concerning the prohibition of the sale of cigarettes and/or tobacco products to youth under the age of 18.

Under the direction and supervision of DMHAS investigators, an underage youth, employed by the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, entered the stores and attempted to purchase tobacco products.

A total of 14 unannounced compliance inspections were conducted in Mystic, Stonington and Pawcatuck.

Of this total, two establishments were found to be in violation: Mystic Mobil at 66 Whitehall Ave. in Mystic and Chucky’s Food Mart at 60 S. Broad St. in Pawcatuck. Those establishments were issued an infraction ticket with a $200 fine.

The cigarette dealer license holder at each establishment also faces additional administrative sanctions from the Department of Revenue Services.
