Groton man arrested after woman flees alleged assault, flags down motorist

Groton — Police arrested a Groton man Wednesday night after a woman who suffered an alleged assault ran to a nearby street and flagged down a passing car.

    The motorist called 911.

Groton City police called an ambulance for the woman, 39, who had scratches and bruises and had run from the apartment where the alleged assault took place at about 9:20 p.m., police said.

Officers arrested a suspect walking in the area shortly after.

Edgar Cobena-Guerrero, 23, of 31 Litton Ave. in Groton was charged with first-degree strangulation, second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace, police said.

He was held on a $10,000 bond and arraigned Thursday in New London Superior Court.

Sgt. Mike Masucci said the woman ran from the apartment to the Rainville area, "flagged down traffic" and told a passerby she'd been beaten by someone she knew.

The motorist called for help and police arrived, called an ambulance, and located and arrested the man.
