State, local police conduct drug sweep at Stonington High School

Stonington — Police dog teams for eight law enforcement agencies conducted an unannounced sweep of lockers and the property at Stonington High School Wednesday morning.

The sweep, which was authorized by school officials, led to the discovery of marijuana in one vehicle on school property, according to Capt. Todd Olson.

An unidentified student was referred to the town’s juvenile diversion board after being cited for possession of marijuana.

The K-9 teams came from state police as well as East Lyme, Groton Town, Norwich, Old Saybrook, Stonington, Waterford and Westerly police departments.

“Utilizing other department assets allows us to conduct the sweep more efficiently and limits the disruption of the school day,” Olson said.

In December 2014, a similar sweep at the high school resulted in two students being cited for possession of marijuana.

When Mark Friese took over as principal in August 2014, he informed families that K-9 Officer Earl Palmer and the department’s police dog, Odin, would make occasional, unannounced sweeps of hallways, lockers and parking lots as a deterrent to students’ use of illegal drugs.

Friese said at the time that illegal drug use, mostly marijuana, is on the rise, and it is a distraction that he does not want in the school.

Board of Education policy allows police dogs in the building to search for illegal drugs. Students, though, are not searched.
