Norwich - A fire at a single-family home on Vergason Avenue was quickly extinguished late Monday morning.

Yantic Fire Chief Frank Blanchard said the fire at 182 Vergason Ave. was reported at 11:03 a.m.

When crews arrived, there was smoke and fire coming from the first floor, he said.

A woman and six children were in the residence. Blanchard said the woman was able to get the children out of the home and into a vehicle.

The woman, he said, was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. She was loaded into an American Ambulance and had soot marks on her face and hands.

It was not clear how the woman was related to the children.

    No other injuries were reported.

Blanchard said the first floor sustained "significant" smoke and fire damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

In addition to Yantic, Taftville, East Great Plain and the Mohegan Tribal fire departments also responded.
