New London — A Tuesday afternoon fire at 49 Rogers St. displaced four families, according to the American Red Cross.

The cause and origin of the fire, which was called in at 2:17 p.m. and was deemed under control by 3 p.m., still is not known, fire officials said Tuesday night.

Around 2:40 p.m., Fire Chief Henry Kydd said it wasn't clear whether the fire started inside or outside the building.

He said at the time that the Red Cross would have to assist at least four residents, all of whom resided in one of the apartments at 49 Rogers St.

The Red Cross on Tuesday night said it helped four families — a total of eight residents.

The building that houses 49 Rogers St. also houses 47 Rogers St. Both addresses have multiple units.

The Red Cross did not and fire officials could not clarify if residents of 47 Rogers St. also were displaced by the fire.
