Norwich — A Norwich woman was charged Tuesday with allegedly collecting unemployment compensation from Connecticut while working in Maine.

Tanya Stonick, 38, of 91 Prospect St. was charged with first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community and unemployment compensation fraud.

Stonick collected about $11,690 in unemployment benefits from May 2011 through February 2012 while working in Maine, and after she had voluntarily left her job, which makes her ineligible for benefits.

She was arrested by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit in the Office of the Chief State's Attorney following a complaint by the Connecticut Department of Labor.

The larceny charge is a Class B felony punishable by no less than one year and no more than 20 years in prison and/or up to a $15,000 fine.

Unemployment compensation fraud in excess of $500 is a Class D felony punishable by no less than one year and no more than five years in prison and/or up to a $5,000 fine.
