Trash can catches fire outside Norwich Walgreens

Norwich — Fire officials have opened an investigation after a trash can outside the West Main Street Walgreens went up in flames Monday afternoon.

According to a news release, a caller reported the fire outside 399 W. Main St. about 2:48 p.m.

When Fire Chief Kenneth Scandariato arrived on scene two minutes later, the release details, he saw not only the can, but also a portion of the building on fire.

Lauren Casady, an inspector with the Fire Marshal's Office, said Tuesday evening that Scandariato was concerned initially that the flames — which affected the soffit on one of the building's corners — had made their way inside.

According to the release, by the time members of the Norwich Fire Department arrived, Walgreens employees had moved the can away from the building and used an extinguisher to put out the fire.

Firefighters checked both the interior of the Walgreens and its overhang and found that the fire hadn't spread. They reported it under control at 3:15 p.m.

The building's soffit, Casady said, experienced some heat damage, but the Walgreens didn't have to close.

    No injuries were reported.

The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
