New London fire company revives three overdose patients

New London — Emergency medical technicians from the city fire department revived three patients who were suffering from suspected heroin overdoses Saturday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said the department responded at 2:40 p.m. to a call of an unconscious person in a car at the New London Shopping Center.

The first responders found two male patients, whom they revived with Narcan and took to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

About an hour later, after receiving a report of an unconscious woman in a car near 922 Bank St., EMTs again administered Narcan to a patient and took her to the hospital, Nichols confirmed.

The hospital has reported treating an unprecedented number of heroin overdose patients recently, with 22 cases between Jan. 27 and Feb. 5.

Two people died of suspected heroin overdoes in New London during the same period, and Ledyard police reported a man died from a suspected overdose of prescription narcotics.
