Man dead of suspected heroin overdose in Waterford

Waterford — A 21-year-old man died of a suspected heroin overdose Tuesday morning, according to town police.

Lt. Stephen Bellos said police and the Waterford Ambulance Company were called to an address on Gallup Lane for a possible overdose at 5:12 a.m.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Waterford police are conducting an investigation, and an autopsy will be performed by the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

"We're looking to see if any of this is connected to the recent overdoses in the area," Bellos said.

Lawrence + Memorial Hospital reported, as of Friday, that they treated 28 patients for heroin overdoses since Jan. 27.

Police said two people died of suspected heroin overdoses in New London during that time and a Montville man died of a suspected overdose on prescription pills.

Area police are working to identify the source of a potent batch of heroin.
