Waterford police: Man stole baby formula from two Target stores in past week

Waterford — Police on Thursday said they're seeking a man who allegedly has stolen baby formula from two area Target stores within the past week.

According to police, the most recent theft occurred at the state Route 85 Target in Waterford around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

In that incident, police said, a white man with thin facial hair who's estimated to be 20 to 30 years old concealed 26 cans of baby formula and exited through the fire doors, where a red four-door sedan with a sun roof was waiting.

The man allegedly used the same technique when taking baby formula from another local Target store within the past week, according to police.

Baby formula, police said, is frequently stolen from local retailers due to its "high resale value."

“We see it constantly,” Lt. Timothy Silva said by phone Friday morning. “When my kids were smaller, you used to be able to get it off the shelf. Now, almost everywhere — Stop and Shop, Walmart, big retail stores like that — it’s locked away and you’ve got to get a manager to get it for you.”

Silva said it’s hard to say exactly where the stolen baby formula is sold, but police suspect small convenience stores and online shoppers are the biggest buyers.

“Formula is one of those things that’s very expensive — for the stores, too,” he said. “It’s much more lucrative for them if they buy it stolen.”

Photos of the man and his vehicle can be seen on the Waterford Police Department Facebook page.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at (860) 442-9451, direct message them on their Facebook page or email Officer Matthew Fedor at mafedor@waterfordct.org.
