Editor's note: This version corrects the town in which the incident took place.

Groton – Police found an AK-47 when they responded to a local home to check on the welfare of a possible domestic abuse victim.

Barry S. Wood, 64, of 118 Brookshaven Road, Groton, was charged on Tuesday with interfering with police, possession of an assault weapon and possession of a large capacity magazine.

He was released on a $50,000 bond and is due to appear in court on May 24.

Police arrested Wood on a warrant related to the Jan. 27 incident. Officers responded to a Groton home that day after a caller reported possible domestic abuse, according to an arrest warrant.

Wood answered the door and told police the woman was not there, the affidavit said. Wood also said he did not have the woman’s phone number and didn’t know what kind of car she drove, the affidavit said.

Officers became suspicious, tried to look into the residence and Wood blocked their view, the warrant application said.

Police then forced their way inside and fought to subdue Wood, pulling him to the ground in the laundry room. An officer then saw a rifle next to the washing machine and discovered it was an AK-47 in operable condition, with a 30-round ammunition magazine. Police seized the rifle, ammunition and magazine.
