Groton man arraigned on heroin distribution charges

Jose A. Davila, arrested on drug and gun charges Monday during a raid on a Groton commercial property, was arraigned Tuesday before New London Superior Court Judge Omar A. Williams, who set his bond at $49,000, cash only, and transferred the case to the court where major crimes are tried.

Groton Town Police charged Davila, 31, of 300 Branford Ave. with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of more than 1 ounce of heroin with intent to sell, criminal possession of a firearm and altering the serial number of a firearm after the Regional Community Enhancement Task Force executed a search warrant at 114 South Road.

Davila and an unidentified partner allegedly were distributing heroin and running a vehicle wholesaling operation from the property.

During the raid, police said they seized 5.5 ounces of heroin laced with fentanyl, a Hi Point .380 pistol with the serial number filed off, a digital scale, cutting agent and plastic bags, two cellphones, numerous vehicles and other items.

Davila was in one of three campers parked next to a large industrial garage when task force members arrived with the search warrant about 9:15 a.m., according to police.

Davila opened the locked door of the camper several minutes after the police announced their presence. He admitted there was at least 100 grams of heroin in the bedroom, according to the probable cause report.

The heroin was located under a mattress in a wooden compartment. The handgun, with 80 rounds of ammunition, was in a cabinet above the bed, according to the report.

Davila’s next court date is June 14.
