New London police arrest suspect evading custody

New London — Several streets were closed Wednesday afternoon as police, bearing warrants for the man's arrest, looked for the suspect attempting to evade them.

According to police, Kellon McPherson, 21, of 63 Buchanan Road was found hiding in a backyard between Willets Avenue and Mahan Street.

He was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant on narcotics charges.

He was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, three counts of sale of illegal drugs, interfering with police, second-degree breach of peace, first-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief.

About 12:30 p.m., police said they saw McPherson in a vehicle on Truman Street. Officers followed the car to the area of Ocean Avenue and Willets Avenue, where McPherson ran, according to police.

New London police, with help from the Waterford Police Department, had closed Mahan Street and Viets, Clement and Richmond streets to normal traffic from Willets Avenue through Ocean Avenue.

An officer at the scene said the search originated in the area of Mahan Street. A K-9 and officer could be seen walking up and down Willetts Avenue about 1:30 p.m. At least a half dozen officers had congregated at the intersection of Longview and Viets streets.

Police were telling residents not to walk around in the area during the search.

McPherson was being held on $410,000 in bonds.
