Ledyard police arrest New London man after crash at Naval Submarine Base

Ledyard — A New London man is facing several charges after speeding through town and crashing into the north gate of the Naval Submarine Base early Thursday morning, according to police.

Orlando Mateo, 32, of 393 Broad St., New London, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, misuse of plates, driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance, traveling too fast for conditions, driving an unregistered vehicle and failure to obey a traffic signal.

According to police, an officer who was attending to a separate incident observed Mateo driving his vehicle erratically on Long Cove Road around 12:20 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the officer attempted to follow Mateo, who was speeding and eventually turned left onto Military Highway.

Mateo then crashed into the north gate of the Naval Submarine Base, causing damage to the exterior fence, according to police.

Police said Mateo also was charged on a warrant with failure to appear in court.

Mateo was held on an unspecified bond and was scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Thursday.
