Police: Ledyard man passed out drunk, left toddlers unattended

Ledyard — Police on Monday arrested a local man they say passed out drunk on a toddler's bed and left two young children unattended in his residence.

Arthur F. Chabot, 43, of 2 Winthrop Road, Gales Ferry, was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

According to police, a resident who frequents the nearby McDonald's, where Chabot's girlfriend works, thought Chabot seemed out of it when she saw him with his kids there earlier Monday.

The resident told police she alerted the girlfriend to Chabot's possible intoxication and left.

According to police, the resident said she saw Chabot passed out on a chair outside his residence when she drove by about 30 minutes later.

At that point, the resident said she returned to McDonald's to tell the girlfriend about the latest development and then put a call in to the state Department of Children and Families, which in turn asked Ledyard police to do a well-being check.

Police said when they went to the Winthrop Road residence, they found Chabot passed out on a toddler's bed, his 1-year-old slumped over in a high chair, asleep, and his 2-year-old wandering around the house.

They placed him under arrest without incident.

Records show Chabot in 2012 was convicted of having driven under the influence of alcohol or drugs in 2011.

Chabot was held on a $1,000 bond and was due in New London Superior Court on Tuesday.
