New London burglary suspect attempts escape at courthouse

New London — An accused burglar made a short-lived escape attempt Thursday when he broke away from police officers accompanying him to a New London courthouse.

Henry Rogers, 43, of 122 Thames St., Groton, had spent the night at police headquarters following his arrest in connection with a midday burglary Wednesday on Colman Street.

Detectives had used tips from neighbors and surveillance footage from a local convenience store to help identify Rogers as the suspect. When Rogers was caught, police said they found the victim’s property in his possession along with other items they suspect were stolen. Police said they are now working with area law enforcement agencies to identify other potential victims.

Rogers initially was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny.

His escape attempt came Thursday when he fled from officers after his arrival at New London Superior Court on Broad Street. Rogers led police on a brief foot chase into the backyard of a residence on Brainard Street where police said he continued to resist officers. He was ultimately subdued with a Taser.

    No officers were injured.

Rogers now faces the additional charges of escape from custody and interfering with an officer. Held in lieu of a $150,000 bond, he is due to appear Friday in New London Superior Court.
